frogeye leaf spot disease of soybean, caused by the fungus Cercospora sojina

Ink painting/drawing of frogeye leaf spot disease of soybean, caused by the fungus Cercospora sojina.

The painting shows a trifoliate soybean leaf covered in small round light grey-brown lesions. Each lesion has a dark brown ring at its outer border. In some areas the lesions have fused into necrotic patches.

You can compare this image with Cercospora Leaf Spot on sugar beet. These are two closely related diseases that affect different hosts.

This image will be paired with soybean rust (planned for 29 Jan 2023).

S. E. Bartholomew @Phytopoetry tweeted a two-verse poem in response to my painting!

The two tweet screenshots read:

Soy Killa Part 1 of 2:

When little gray eyes with red mascara

Peep from the beans you must beware-a

I despise frog eyes on soybean tri’s

For the perioles triplets are troubled

Photosynthesis fails if lesions prevail

If Cercospora tells its sad tale

Soy Killa Part 2 of 2:

A non-host crop can help put a stop

To the rampaging craze of sporezilla

Fungicide used in a way that is wise

Blinds the eyes of this soybean killa

But if fungicide fails, frogeye will prevail

And Cercospora makes Glycine wail
