Orange Cat
10 May 2025
I painted an amazing orange cat from Reddit.
The original photograph, of the cat in a sink, really struck me. It had the perfect shapes and geometry for a cubist interpretation.
To create the painting, I used masking tape and layered blocks of colour. First, I taped the outline and painted everything in a orange. Then I covered each section that I wanted to keep in tape, before painting new layers of colour.
The materials used were:
Ultratape LTMT1 Low Tack Masking Tape (25mm)
Hobbycraft A4 watercolour paper (190gsm, acid free)
leftover paint from kits:
paintwithnumbers.uk: oranges 0880, 2079 and 1412
paintingbynumbers.co.uk: brown 1973, pink 1508 and black 1945
The painting shows an orange cat in a sink, lying down in a twisted pose. The cat’sforepaws rest on the sink’s edge, hind legs point upward, and its head and tail curve toward each other, almost touching.
The montage below shows:
a photograph of the cat
a blob of tape and paint, resembling a bad pizza
the tape removed, leaving the abstract angled outline of the cat in three shades of orange
another blob of paint and tape, this time with a thick black outline
the final cubist interpretation of the cat
