Light + Shadow 2024: Chalk and Charcoal Drawings

Feb - Sep 2024

I practiced drawing in chalk and charcoal to develop a better understanding of light and shadow. The vast majority of these pictures were drawn from reference objects illuminated using a single strong light source. The materials used were:

  • Strathmore 400 Series Toned Tan 118gsm Paper Spiral Bound Sketchpad (acid free, 30% post-consumer fibre)

  • General’s Pencil Charcoal Kit 11 pieces

You can find the resulting pictures, from my weekly practice series, in the portfolio below. The drawings are presented in reverse chronological order - by comparing the newer ones with with the older ones, you can see how my technique improved.

If you would like to use these for teaching, or to hang on your wall/ office door, please do. For anything else, please contact me and ask.
